2017 museum News

Sadly Old Government House Museum got very badly damaged by Hurricane Irma on September 6th 2017. The roof remained in place but was no longer watertight and allowed much water through. Many of the windows and shutters were blasted away. In the following weeks, the Museum staff and Board members did what they could to salvage the contents of the building but at least half of the furniture and historic objects in the museum were destroyed by the wind that raced through.

The team worked hard to clear up the damaged contents, sorting out those items that could be repaired from those that were completely destroyed. Luckily the beautiful murals painted by Margaret Barwick and local artists remained mainly intact. There is a small amount of water damage and slight peeling in places but they are in remarkably good shape still.

Since the building is no longer structurally sound, Old Government House and the garden has been closed to the public since then. Its beauty remains though.
